Why a Handmade Quilt is a Great Gift for Kids

Why a Handmade Quilt is a Great Gift for Kids

I’m a big believer in giving gifts that really mean something and can stand the test of time. Throwaway, consumerist culture has gone way too far and neither people nor the planet really need another plastic toy added to the basket every time a children’s birthday or Christmas comes around. If there really is something particular they have their heart set on, second hand is the way to go at least!

I’m obviously a bit biased over here… but I truly believe that a handmade quilt is a fab gift for a child. Let me tell you why!

Quilts are multi-taskers

Think a quilt is just for staying super cosy? Think again! They can easily double as a superhero cape or a cover for den making. My son’s checkerboard quilt also serves as parking spaces and a crash mat for his many mini cars!

Quilts can be easily personalised

Nothing says “special gift” quite like a bit of personalisation. I’m always more than happy to add a hand-embroidered name to any of my quilts. Ordering a fully custom quilt with elements and colours that reflect your child’s personality is an even better way to take things one step further.

Quilts can be sustainable and educational

The materials we choose to have in our home are so important, from both a personal and planetary perspective. All Studio Brûle quilts are made using recycled and remnant fabrics (read more about why here), favouring cotton and linen for the vast majority of the creations. And always a cotton batting centre, never-ever polyester! Gifting your child a quilt like this is also a chance to teach them about the importance of choosing quality, planet-friendly materials as they grow and start making more of these choices by themselves. What a beautiful lesson to be passing on!

Quilts mark the passage of time

I’m already half loving/half nostalgic at how big my son is when I see the difference in pictures of him asleep under his quilt as a baby vs playing with it as a toddler. In the not-too-distant future, it will be a lap-size quilt for when he sits reading on the sofa. One customer even said she hopes her son ends up taking his quilt to his uni halls one day! The photos and memories are so special and prove what a long-lasting gift a quilt can be.

I feel I could keep going, but I hope this is already enough to convince you that a handmade quilt is a beautiful, versatile gift to give a child! If you’d like to buy your own, check out my shop or get in touch for custom ideas.
