Easy Ways to Make Your Kid’s Room Cosy For Autumn

Autumn is my favourite time of year, especially where we live in the South West of France. The changing colours of the leaves, the earlier sunsets that I can actually enjoy because I’m not already in bed after a tiring day with an almost 4-year-old... I just love it! In October, the mornings are crisp enough for jeans and a cosy hand knitted jumper, but the afternoons are often 24 degrees and sunny. What a dream combo. Although admittedly it’s sometimes hard to know what to wear!

As the seasons change it can also be nice to make small changes to your home, getting out your cosiest quilts or switching up some decorations to reflect the colours of nature. This can be especially fun in a kids’ room because it really doesn’t take much to make some impactful changes.

I’ve got to be honest, until now I’ve very much not done this!! I’ve had all the best intentions but never got round to putting things into action. This year, I decided to get my act together, so here are a few tiny things I’ve done to give my son’s room an autumnal touch.

Decorate Your Child's Room With A Seasonal Craft

Despite being creative and always making something, I must admit I don’t do much craft with my son. He’s more of a lego/chaos/bike riding kind of guy and any attempt I make usually doesn’t last long! But I did manage to persuade him to preserve some beautiful leaves in beeswax (seen via @NorthwoodsFolk) this week, which was so fun.

He had an empty corner above his bed that was in need of some love, so I just tied the leaves to some embroidery thread I already had and strung them up like a garland. It looks so cute! I think I’m going to use this idea to rotate seasonal craft decorations - snow flakes in winter, and paper suns in summer, for example.

Make Your Kid's Lighting More Cosy

As you can see from the picture above, I also added fairy lights to the garland as I felt that the corner was still lacking an extra touch of magic.  I raided the Christmas decoration stash and found a battery powered pack that fit perfectly. You honestly just can’t go wrong with a fairy light for a sparkling, cosy touch to a kids’ room. My son was thrilled with the result!

He already has a lamp by his books, so we’ll also just turn this on more and the big light on less. Cosy vibes in seconds without changing a thing in his room!

Layer Up Your Child's Bedding

My son already has two handmade quilts from me, so I knew we had good options for layering on his bed. I simply layered them one on top of the other then tucked a few of his toys in for extra cuteness and some lovely complex texture in one cosy little corner.

If you’d like to add a quilt to your child’s room, check out my shop for what’s in stock or get in touch for a custom order. I’d love to dream up something with you that will make your little one’s room snug and ready for the colder months.

Switch To Seasonal Colours

Before you freak out, this isn’t about a full repaint each season! You absolutely don’t need to change the whole room - just the odd accessory that matches what you’ve already got going on. For example, I chose to put the quilt with more autumnal colours on top of the lighter one on his bed. I also simply rearranged his books to have reds, dark greens or more seasonal titles to the front. Such a tiny change but it adds a lovely subtle difference to the decor.

Now that I've finally made some autumnal changes to my son's bedroom decor, I'm definitely going to keep doing it with each season change going forward. It's a lovely way to mark the passage of time and really doesn't need to be high effort at all.

I'd love to hear what you think and if you have any personal favourites you do at home. Let me know in the comments!
